Hi all,

I currently have a savage 25 that I’ve had for about 12 years, somehow it still works but is getting a bit tired!

I recently purchased a load of savage x parts on eBay and will need a gearbox amongst other things to build up an X chassis. I have read some negative things about the X two speed gearbox so would I be able to use the existing gearbox from my 25?

Here’s a pic of the savage x stuff I have on it’s way to me in the post :)

Thanks in advance :)

I never had an issue with my X 2-speed. That being said, you definitely want the X transmission case instead of your 25. The X style has a removable top, makes many things alot easier.

Ahh okay thanks for that. Am I right in thinking the internals are the same but just a different ‘flywheel/spur’ arrangement?

Sorry if these are silly questions, only just got back into using my savage after years of no use. Last time I used mine the 25 was still being produced

What oil or grease do you use in the gearbox? looks like 2 bungs on the side of the gearbox and it looks dry inside new to Savages just finding my way round it only got it today its second hand

those 2 "bungs" are the adjustment holes for shift point. , I just used a light coat of white lithium grease on the gear teeth for my Savage X transmission....

There was a bad slipper setup floating out there for one of the savage series, may have been the very first gen X. It was a dual slipper pad, one on the back and front of the spur. It was notoriously bad. Other than that, the X transmission is good and as noted, easier to work on as you can take the top off. This was for the 3-speed trans as one of the shift points required taking the top of the transmission off to get at the adjustment screw. Was kind of a stupid setup really that was annoying to adjust, but was cool to hear it shift twice. The 2-speed fit in that trans case fine as well.
