Hello all,

My Savage X 4.6 just arrived today and I am patiently waiting for the glow plug charger and the roto start battery to fully charge. Looks like I won’t be starting break in until tomorrow. I do have some questions and would appreciate any advice:

Manual reads to not charge battery for the root charge more than 6 hours. So if I charge it today, should I plug it back in tomorrow for an hour or so since today’s charging will be done by around 7pm?

10 years ago, I put after run oil in the engine after each run and also cleaned the air filter and saturated it with air filter oil after each run. Is this still necessary? I don’t see after run oil mentioned in the manual

Thanks everyone!

To answer your first question about no the battery should be ok overnight. Second I always ran after run oil to be safe as for the air filter I cleaned mine every few runs if I wasn't running in dusty conditions.

As a recent returnee to the world of nitro cars can someone explain after run oil to me ?

Never heard of it, and never used it when I had my car out playing nearly 20 yrs ago .....

I never liked after run oil, I stopped using it in favor of using WD40 in the carb intake after I am done with my nitros, After run will congeal into a mess and clog up the engine making it necessary to do a manual cleaning of it.... WD 40 in a gallon can is cheap and does not congeal inside the engine, use an eye dropper or something to add the WD40 and spin the engine and store as normal....

Is doing anything really necessary ?

After putting my car away in the loft for 18 yrs I got it out, cleaned the gunk out of the fuel tank and away she went and runs just fine.

Thanks Dingle and Jam Racing 1!

10 years ago I used a drop of two of after run oil after each run. But now I am going to follow Jam Racing’s lead and use WD40 instead.

Jam Racing, should I do this after each run or just when I don’t plan on running the truck for a week or two or for the winter?

What are your thoughts on air filter oil? Should I use that after every few runs?

Thanks again you’ve been a font of information!

I had better luck with ARO than WD40, especially with engines that had an internal OWB. WD tended to gunk things up more than the generic ARO I used did.

Anytime I let a truck sit for more than a few weeks, I put a few drops down the glowplug hole and carb throat. I actuate the carb to work the oil in and spin the engine over a few times to get the oil flung around inside the engine. Without it, the raw metal parts inside the engine tend to corrode and the left over oil from the fuel gets very gummy.

I've had them sit on a shelf for a year and they spin just as free and start up just fine afterwards. The old worn out engines in my junk drawer show what not using it does as they are gummy feeling when you rotate the crank and the OWB's tend to not grab as the oil from the fuel gummed up in them.

thanks for your input olds97!

What about air filter oil? I don’t have any and may end up doing break in and running the truck for several tanks or so before I get to my lhs.
