XTM Mammoth ST

As many of you know I am a collector and restorer of R/C stuff no longer in production...
I just came across this XTM Mammoth ST that was in pieces and looks to be all there as far as running gear... needs a few bits and pieces but that is all available on E Bay so is all good and is on the way to me as I type this.... I have the big brother to this rig in the form of my XTM MMT and will be bringing it back to restored factory new condition...



This is the 1/8 stadium version of the rig, outta be a pretty easy build and a great addition to my collection of nitro trucks.....

Yup I am an R/C hoarder for sure, I just love getting a used and abused truck and bringing it back to former glory

And we all benefit. Getting to see cool kits we may never get our hands on. Eventually we may need a sub forum called Jams Projects or something like that to house all these.

Was checking the differentials and found this, piece of the ring gear just fell out when I opened the case to inspect the internals.... good thing I have parts in my cart at E Bay for this rig.... and just look at that nasty grease inside this diff, time for a complete overhaul of this one, hope the rear diff is ok, but in case I do have 2 ring gears and internals coming to me now.....

This rig uses a planetary style diff which is a bit tougher than a bevel style diff is....



I will post pics when I get the new parts and rebuild this differential.....

I never heard planetary was "tougher" than spider gears. XTM listed the spider diff as an "upgrade". I had a mammoth ST for a short while. The two speed sucked and the aluminum was so soft everywhere on that thing. I gave up on the two speed and got a center diff... then realized a single speed nitro MT is awful, but having a two speed without a slipper is equally awful. Was very easy to work on though, lots of space.

I dunno what you mean by the alloy being weak and the 2 speed sucking, I have beat the snot out of my XTM MMT, it has planetary diffs in it also and I have experienced zero failures on the 2 speed hub, yes it does not use a slipper but in truth I don't miss not having one in my rig...... you must have gotten a bad one because for everything I have put my MMT thru it has had zero issues, much less than a comparable Savage or most other ones I have in my fleet......

I will report on the Mammoth ST once I have some wheel time but if the MMT is any indicator I think it will be just fine.....

I don't know what was wrong with mine then. I literally folded over shock towers, ripped aluminum hinge pin braces in twain and turned the main chassis deck into a banana. I didn't bash it any harder than my savage at the time. I didn't even jump it that high. The two speed grenaded on me twice and I blew both front/rear diffs out of it before going with a center diff. Due to chassis flex, I went through spur gears left and right as well.

Was a very frustrating rig for me and it just didn't hold up. It was pretty much brand new when I got it as a roller. Didn't even have scrapes on the chassis.

Well the sickness continues, I was cruising E Bay and came across another Mammoth ST, this one has a body and everything minus an engine, the chassis doesn't even have any real scrapes on it leading me to think it is barely used and was taken apart then someone lost interest so I made a score for $128.00 shipped to me, so now I have 2 complete Mammoth St's, one will be parts while the nicest parts of both will become the next running one in my fleet.....

All in all for just over 200 bux I have enough parts to keep this one running for quite awhile.....

Nice! Looks like that one had that weird reverse mechanism too!

I have am xtm st I'm building and center diff has no engagement would you have any ideas for a replacent? I can't find any parts. Anything at this point will help cuzz I'm stuck

I also wanna add that to has no front shaft so its only rwd. Is the front shaft necessary for proper engagement? Or is it just worn spider gears?

If there's a center diff, it won't work without a front shaft. The diff will just spin.

It would work with RWD only if you had the two speed.
