What's the difference between transmission 87218 and 88257

It has the 2 plugs on side not 3. The guy says it's 3 speed tho. I bought a new 2 speed to go in it because I thought it was a 2 speed. It was $25 with shipping. I'll upgrade to the 3 speed later on. Or maybe I can fix the one I have if it is a 3 speed. I didn't pay much attention to that was making sure nothing was broken.

It could be he bought a three speed conversion and put it in a 2 speed case. Is there three gears on the shaft that goes to the spur gear if so should be three speed.

I'm fairly positive there were 3. So I now will have a 2 speed. No biggie to me tho. I'll be happy to have a solid tranny again. I'll probably upgrade later to the 3 speed kit. What would break in the tranny when you lock up the brakes and flip the truck? Maybe I can put my 3 speed into the new tranny?

Yeah I'm sure something is pretty messed up. When I apply the brakes it still grinds but only when the brake is engaged lightly. The spur gear has like an 1/8-1/4" play when I wiggle it. I'm not going to mess around with it. I'll it just wait for the new one. Just anxiously waiting to bash the thing!! I really appreciate all the help from you guys. Ended up being fairly easy seeing most parts are interchangeable.

Here's the gears from the transmission that came with the truck. They're a little sloppy but nothing broken or chipped. I put my reverse module into the new one and it still makes a grinding noise when the brakes are lightly engaged. I can't believe it's supposed to do that when the brakes are applied. That would be something in my reverse module seeing that it's a new transmission correct? Other than that it rolls very smooth now. Really bummed it's still doing that tho...

That's a two speed. I never had reverse, so not sure what it looks like inside with reverse in it.

This is what the top/input gear would look like if it was 3-speed:

And the 3-speed shifting gears. Well, most of them. I had a crew in my trans and it decimated 1st gear since it was plastic. Chipped one of the teeth in the top gear too if you look close.

Stupid screw...

I got annoyed having to take the top of the trans off to change gearing from winter to summer gearing. I ran lower gearing in the winter with a junky motor I didn't care about. Was a pain fussing with shift points when your fingers were numb.

That's a shitty deal!! I forgot a bearing when I put the new transmission in lol it fell out while I was putting the reverse in. Was wondering why my spur gear was moving soo much lol had everything all back together. That's ok i can tear it apart and put it back together faster next time lol.
