Shortly after I got my Savage X, a buddy of mine gave me a Duratrax Warhead. It's an older truck, long since discontinued, but this one is in great shape and should have considerable life left. The Warhead design has quite a few similarities to the Savage. In fact, when I first saw it, I figured it was an older savage until I further researched and got into the documentation.

Spur gears for the Warhead are almost impossible to find now. There are lots of other Warhead parts but no spur gears. I am wondering if it is possible to use install a Savage spur gear (and slipper pads, springs, bushing, etc.) into the Warhead so I can use Savage parts going forward. Seems straight forward from a flywheel / clutch / clutch bell perspective. Engines aren't truck specific so I'm assuming they're made to handle whatever flywheel and clutch a truck might require. But I'm not sure what issues I might face trying to change out the spur gear and related parts on the transmission side.

Also, if it's the case that I can't use Savage parts, is there any other aftermarket manufacturer whose parts I should consider?

Here's a pic of the two trucks:

Thanks!

we will need to see pix of the stock Warhead spur gear and savage spur gear and both slipper parts to even figure out if it is even possible to do such a thing......

Alright, here are a few pictures of spur gears and slipper pad sets from the Savage and from the Warhead:

They're somewhat similar in design, I would say. Obviously differently sized holes. I'm hoping that the Warhead gear is sized for a bushing in the middle, otherwise the smaller hole on the Savage could be a show stopper.

I'm hoping that there's some kind of option (using Savage parts or some other solution). Seems ridiculous to think about retiring a perfectly good truck just because I can't find a 3 dollar plastic part.

Any ideas?

If the teeth are the same pitch and line up ok you can use the Savage spur no problem.
There was an "upgraded "spurgear a few years ago with a dual slipperpad for the Savage. (used on an early X https://www.hpiracing.com/en/parts/859/std)

But if you can drill out the slipperclutch hub to make it fit the Duratrax you will be fine imo..
Just make it fit.. I would!!

Have you used a caliper on the shafts the spurs slide onto each truck to see how much of a size diff there is? You might be able to use savage x parts almost to a T with slight modification. From the pics they look dang close.

I haven't yet but that will be my next move. I'm thinking there's a good chance. And if it works my worries will be solved. Would love to be able to buy all Savage parts and use them on all of the trucks.

I'm thinking the same for air filters. The Warheads filter is a bit worn. Just bought a new Savage air filter sleeve set, gonna try it out shortly.

I also just picked up another Warhead off of eBay. Pretty cheap. Plan was to use it for parts. But once I received it, I realized it's in pretty good shape. Might end up trying to get it going and add it to the group. Haha, I think I may have a bit of problem here, I've from 0 trucks to 3 nitros and 1 electric in about 2 months. Better slow it down before this gets out of hand. But what can I say, I've got the bug and it's been a lot of fun.

I had the same problem i bought a savage x 4.6 converted it to a flux. Then shortly after i completed it i bought a savage 25 off ebay in desperate need of my love and the savage x parts i had left over from my flux build. After completing that one then the wife and son turned around and bought me a hpi jumpshot sc. So yea i know where your coming from lol.

I had a warhead evo back in 05-07 one of those years and it was read perfect shape I sold it back in 14. Pretty much brand new but took to hobby shop to find a good motor like a pull start to drop in but from all the information trying to get a better spur and clutch they were like there is nothing you can do to this truck or upgrade so I sold it. I like the warhead as far as durability it was a solid heavy truck in my opinion it was really stuff just very solid.

Interesting stuff. Doesn't sound promising for me as far as your experiences with lack of spur / clutch upgrades. And that was way back when the truck was still being actively made, right? We'll see, I still plan to look into using Savage parts, just need to find the time to check it out and see if it's a possibility.

For the moment, I've been scouring the internet and buying spare Warhead spur gears here and there. There aren't many out there but I've managed to locate a few and have a decent supply on hand now. More for the original Warhead than for the Warhead Evo, which I found surprising.

I just finished a teardown / clean / rebuild on the Warhead Evo. It showed up (after buying it on eBay) and looked decent but I thought it needed some work. It shined up pretty well, I have to say. It's hard to believe that it's probably 10 years old. I'll try to post some pictures this weekend.

I feel like you as far as the Warhead design. It does seem very sturdy, heavy, and solid. So many similarities with the Savage design.

When it comes to RC parts, where there's a will....there's a way. There is a virtually infinite amount of available parts that could work. It just may take some adaption.

@ElocFSU Please make sure you keep this updated with whatever you find. There is bound to be others interested.

That happens unfortunately and it doesn't make it easy to find parts at a reasonable price for a rc that the manufacturer got bought out and a lot of parts are on back order ether. But we will all find a way to keep the hobby and awesome trucks like the warhead, savage etc. Alive.

Just for fun, here are a few pictures of the cleaned up Warhead Evo. As I have mentioned, it has an awful lot in common with the Savage design.

Hopefully I'll have some time this weekend to see if it will actually run.

Yea, it's a shame. I like the size - I haven't checked the dimensions but I'm pretty sure it's larger then the Savage. It's pretty heavy though, and I've heard that the Super Tigre engine isn't that great so I'm guessing that the Savage will outperform it. But I'll be a happy camper regardless if I can get it up and running well.

Here are a few more pictures of the Warhead Evo with the Warhead and the Savage.

By the way, I sold the Jumpshot ST. I took it to a friends house and his kids had a blast driving it. So much so that he decided to buy it from me. So I'm back to all nitro again.
