Why does my Savage XL 5.9 keep breaking differential pinion gears?

Landing jumps on throttle is most common cause of that gear breaking off teeth..... when landing from a wheels in the air situation land the truck off throttle and make sure your gears are properly shimmed when you install new parts...

should I replace differential gears with upgraded bulletproof 29/9 gears?

Thats personal preference actually. I have the stock sintered gears in my Savage and have no trouble exploding gears, just remember to release the throttle when doing jumps.....

I just replaced my 43/13 for 29/9 a lot more durable, and top speed I think, and made sure everything was shimmed, like jam said. make sure bearings are not needing replaced, they get a lot of play in them when bad, causing bad gear mesh!

Okay thanks but where are you finding parts for it can't find the gears anywhere

I had that issue many years ago with the 21 style diff cases. Upgraded to alloy cases (not the cups, the actual case the entire diff goes in) so I could shim properly and ran the machined gears available at the time vs the sintered ring gear. They would last a while as long as you kept an eye on the bearings.

With my X and the newer style diff case that splits so you can pull the diff, I haven't bothered upgraded the case to alloy, but I did upgrade to the BP sintered ring/pinion. Haven't had an issue with diffs since I installed them 4+ gallons ago.

Landing a jump while on the gas is probably the worst thing you can do to the diffs. Locking the brakes up on high traction isn't the best for them either.
