I bought this HPI SAVAGE X 4.6 AT a pawn shop for $150.00 plus tax, and I am getting ready to upgrade my Savage X to steel spur gear and clutch bell.

This is also the second find that ive found that only needed minor repair. The first was a Protos 1/8th scale buggy, also with the axial .28 which I'm changing to an HPI .28 IN ABOUT TWO WEEKS.

Be sure to use the hardened vented clutch bells from HPI or another hardened version. The factory HPI ones will not last long on a steel spur.

I always had good luck with plastic spurs, but I stripped one yesterday and I am considering going steel now as well (I already have a racers edge TiNi clutchbell, but not sure if it can handle a steel spur?)

Way ahead of you, I'm running the HPI 86807(SPUR)w/ 77106(CLUTCH BELL) WHICH IS VENTED, so i did my HOMEWORK!!!! I WILL PREPAIR FOR EXTREAM BASHING WAH HA HA HA HA

Trust me, go with the HPI 77106, its vented and made of the hardend still.

Always nice to have extra spurs and clutchbells but the hardened stuff can get costly so it just needs to work :)

Got one tank down on another 49T plastic stock spur gear. I think I set the mesh better this time so we'll see how it worls out. I will certainly be getting more parts soon and will probably try out some of the things mentioned here.

if its been good to you, why change?

with a Proper mesh, a plastic spur will last quite a while.

For me, I couldn't keep a plastic spur alive with my LRP28. The center would melt out if I geared higher than 49/16. Was too much strain on the slipper and it would slip within a tank or two of fuel after taking it off, roughing it up with sand paper. Even with a fully compressed spring. It would heat up so fast that I'd melt the center of the spur out.

Now, with my LRP30 and the HPI steel 47T spur I'm running 47/18 and it's working just fine. May up it to 47/19 if it will fit as the 30 is just a wheelie monster.

i run plastics on all my nitros.whether i choose the Nova, the LrrP32, the picco, or the os30
never really had an issue unless my mesh got messed up
I find its better to just fry a $6.00 plastic gear rather than a steel spur and clutchbell.

...And by the way sweet deal. Especially since it came with extra engine, nice!
UPDATE ON SAVAGE X REBIULD... I just installed a rear NEW differential WITH THE REAR LOCK OUT FOR WHEELIES and I plan on getting another differential to replace the one in the front haven't decided if I'm gonna get a new body for it yet.

I ended up going down to 47/17. 47/18 was ok when running on flat stuff, but was a bit too tall for offroad bashing/jumping.
