Anyone ever use "alternative" shock oil?

lol coke, never thought of that! and who doesnt have KY?!? i was leaning more toward motor oil... did you have a bad experience with it or something? why the "i guess..."?

ya motor oil works cuz thats whats in the savage as stock!! when i changed the shock fluid i realized it was just motor oil, so i got in touch with hpi and they told me yes its just motor oil and it has the consistency of about a 20wt shock oil, but why not just buy the silicone shock fluid? its only like $4 and one 2 ounce bottle does the job!! I'm using 35wt silicone shock fluid on my sav x and its great!!

yeah but 30wt lawn mower engine oil is like 3 bux for a quart and the rest goes in the mower.

haaaaa lol this i said so many times in the shout ppl think I'm a hill billy ..lol ive used cooking oil car oil 30wt.. trans fluid with sux to thin bounces really bad ... dish soap.. mineral oil.. reg silicone oils.. hmmm what else lol.. laundry soap . cant rem them all but out of them all includeing real rc silicone oils my favorite to use is 30wt car oil... has great dampining control and handles very well..

I totally agree. I use strait 30 wt in mine. Ive had no problems with it and seems to be holdin up just fine. For me, its more about the cost. Way more bang for the buck. It might be different if I was racing, but I'm only playin and a little bashing.

why not just get the weight shock fluid you want from the hobby shop for 4 bucks.

thats what i said!! lol the silicone is better anyway,it doesnt get "thick" when its cold or "runny" when its hot it stays the same consistency.. This is why people use it!!!

i would have to say between 30-60wt but ,mainly what i have been reading that its between 30-40

Is there an alternative to engile maintence oil and lub for moving parts, filter cleaner, filter lube. I have a bunch of house hold/garage items on hand and would rather do a tear down this weekend with this used rig then wait a week for all that to get shiped. Plz the saving money part is a plus also ;)
Savage xl 5.6

w d 40 for after run oil, wont gum up motor, simple green to clean rig, wont stain aluminum like royal purple, air filter oil, maybe k&N FILTER OIL, but I wont mess with off brand of air filter oil. it is light and sticky designed for these filters. I wont take a chance on something else,

well, I can give you a summary, and you can do what you want, can afford, and condition of vehicle and parts, diffs, tear down, clean , block and shim, inner gears, then put 50,000 wt, oil, 1,- 2 mm shim on outer diff between bearings and diff. may consider running a 29/9 pinion and ring gear, deeper groove, higher top end and sintered. bullet proof. replace all bearings in diff and out drives, pay special attention to diff and pinion gear bearings, they suck when they go bad so while out,,, replace!!! check all outdrives for wear and replace as needed, 2 piece fiberglass brake set up. 4 bearings in servo saver. servo s if you want, or need. a good and super fast servo is the protek, 100ss for throttle, brake and protek 130t for steering, these servos blow everybody away on speed, and awesome torq, savox are great too, but specs on speed , protek are super speed. my motor seemed to have more power just because the servo s were so fast, blue Loctite all screws that thread into aluminum. that's about it, if you have issues or problems just post! and a good hump pack to feed better servo s, I run a 2500 hump pack

I think I'm gonna put it back together just to see if the breaks and the pullshaft thing will take.if not its that part so at least that will be problemed solved.
I'm sur ill be back. If its not related to the pully then ill start a new thread :) thx again

I have a old savage 21 i think i read somewhere stock shock oils was 100wt i was thinking about trying lucas but its sticky like honey so what should i thin it out with to get 100 wt

100 weight oil is quite heavy, and using lucas will be more expensive that just buying the right oil weight in reality.... 40 to 60 weight shock oil will be more than adequate....

lol I run Harley 20/50 synthetic in my differentials and have had to put thicker o-rings from parts store in them so the oil don't leak out. If i could find a way to seal the carrier, i would run 20/50 in there too, but those get High speed bearing grease and the grease has a tendency to move from the gears to the bevel gear shaft, enmasse.
as far as shocks go.....I never really thought to try "off the shelf" lubricants. I run 60wt losi shock oil in all my shocks. sure be cheaper, easier and more convienent if i could just goto Napa for my needs. 60wt makes my shocks too stiff, as i use dual big-bore shocks of one type or another on all my savages. thinking tranny fluid or power-steering fluid in my shocks...something with no detergents. probably have to switch to fatter o-rings there too
