So I recently picked up an XL. I love this truck so far. I've only run one tank through it, so I can't really speak to the tuning issues that I hear about with the 5.9. Even if that is the case, I have a brand new LRP .30 waiting to go in this thing. I just don't have time to break it in before this bashing season ends. (That's a whole other story). I love that it comes with the Flux drive train and it has the HPI vented clutch bell and a metal spur gear.

With that being said, it also came with some Big Joe's (that are starting to get dry rot). The truck seems to be running slower than it should. Being new to the hobby, I'm assuming it's since these tires are so big and heavy. I'm not interested in changing the gearing as it's already metal and especially since the tires are showing dry rot as mentioned above.

I've been looking at other Proline wheels and hear good things about the Badlands. The Rock Rage look pretty good too. The pictures on their webpage don't really give me an accurate size comparison to the Big Joe's though. I'm not partial to Proline at all. I would prefer to be premounted wheels, but even that is not a deal breaker. So any tire suggestions would be appreciated. Or just tell me that it isn't the tires and I have unrealistic expectations is fine. I'm just here to learn.

On a side note, I think someone posted before that there should be a tire/rim category. I agree as I wasn't sure where to post this question. Since It's going on an XL that's where I'm posting it to.

I'm sure there is information I'm forgetting to post, so just ask and I'll leave it in the comments. Sorry for such a lengthy post.

Yeah, I "think" the big joes are too big and heavy, but it could be something else. Yeah, the badlands did look a little small, that's sort of why I was looking at the Rock Rage. They look like a happy medium @Caretaker109 I'm also open to other tires as well other than proline.

I have the Mashers 40 series and they are great. Also a bit heavy but my driveline can handle them.

Big joe's never gave me any problems to be honest. I have used them on 2 of my savages. I bought the tires and not the pre-mounted ones and axial oversized rims. Taped the tires and glue them myself.. Great combo imo.

Losi zombie max is also a good choice imo.

I'm pretty sure my driveline can handle the Big Joe's, it just seems like it should be faster. Maybe my expectations aren't realistic as I've never had an XL or 5.9. Maybe the LRP .30 will change either way though I'll probably have to get new tires as these are dry rotted. I do need a bigger servo, but that's straight forward enough.

These are not on the premounted black rims. These are on silver rims. Sorry, but like I said I don't know much about tires/rims so can't provide much better information.

The mashers looked cool too. Seem like a happy median as well.

I run Super Swampers on the X, Big Joes on the Octane and Badlands on the FO-XX. I have run them all on the X. I banded the Swampers so they don't balloon. I run 47/16 gearing with an LRP z.28r on the X.

What gearing are you running? Silver rims? 23mm hex or 17mm?
My savage was running 17/49 with the Mashers.

Now I have installed a center diff and gearing is at 17/43 with the Mashers.

I knew I should have looked at the gearing when I ran it this weekend. I'm not sure what it's set to. If I had to guess it's stock, but I'm not sure if the XL comes with a vented CB and metal spur stock or not. I'll look at the parts diagram. I'll try to look when I get home. They are silver 17mm hex rims.

They aren't mounted but body and charger should provide a point of reference.

@Caretaker109 I can't get a good look at the clutchbell with the motor on, but the spur is definitely 52. I've heard conflicting stories about the slipper clutch. Cranked all the way tight, or all the way tight and backed off just a smidge? I haven't checked to see how tight it is. I do know the engine clutch looks brand new.

Wow, really missed the mark on the 14mm. I knew they weren't 23, but thought they were 17 for some reason.

Cranked all the way down it is. Thanks @Jam Racing 1 As usual I will let everyone know the results, but again as usual it may be a while.

Those wheels are 14mm hex Derek.

16/52 is also possible.. Should work with the Big Joe's. Did you check if everything is running smooth.
Maybe slipper is loose?

@Caretaker109 good call on the slipper. Pad is smoked. I'll swap it out soon, but not sure when I'll have time to run again. I have to work 13 out of the first 16 days of October doing 12 hours days, plus school, plus being a dad.

Oh and my CB doesn't have a number and I counted (probably incorrectly) but I counted 16 and the spur is 52.

And @Jam Racing 1 I'm not sure how tight the slipper was, but judging from the pic I posted it wasn't tight enough. Any recommendations on how to tighten it all the way tight since the spur wants to spin?

You really only have to compress the spring all the way, no need to go all gorilla on it.... if ya want a better slipper pad use a ceramic one, I saw some on RC Planet the other day.....

Gorilla lol. I was about to ask about ceramic. I saw some people say they "upgraded" to ceramic, but no one said anything about why they liked it or if it was any better. I assumed it was better as they referred to it as an upgrade, but assuming can be bad.

Nah I have one on my truck, but like any slipper pad it will still glaze if allowed to slip too much but a light hand sand can revive it better than the stock one which once glazed it is gone...

Good to know. I see Amazon has them. Can't beat Prime shipping.

I've never had an issue tightening it all the way down while simply holding the spur. If it needs more effort, perhaps something is in the threads, or the threads have been fouled up somehow.

That's what I did to loosen it, but wasn't sure if it would be the same when it came time to tighten.
