Hey everyone, haven't been on in quite a while. Life gets in the way sometimes. :banghead:

Anyways, long story short, my boy is getting old enough to actually run a true RC. However, I would like the convenience of electric over nitro, also not sure if the nitro motor would still work since it has been sitting for over 4 years. So I am working on a conversion to electric.

My first attempt worked out OK, just hacked together a couple 18 volt motors from some power drills laying around, built some motor mounts from some aluminum flat stock I had laying around, and used a cheap ESC I also had laying around. (pics later, I promise)

Anyways, the truck ran decent, not much speed, but the boy enjoyed it, however the ESC was only rated for 12 volts and I was pushing 18 through it. Needless to say, it smoked after a few runs and we packed the truck away.

Fast forward through the winter months, and now I want to dig out the truck again.

My question I have is what motor/esc combo I should get.

I could go with the brushed motors I have in there and get an ESC, but not sure if I will ever get the performance out of it that I want.

Or, and this is what I am leaning towards

I could go with a brushless combo such as Castle Creations.

If I do the latter, I will probably need to remake, or purchase a proper motor mount and also wade through the new jargon with the Kv and such. ALso determine if the Sidewinder or the Mamba Monster would be better suited.

So now that the introduction is done, I would like to ask for everyone's opinion on the matter at hand.
What combo would you choose, and why.

Thanks!

@bjohanson1234 I'd agree with the KD direct drive conversion kit and join it with a Castle Mamba Monster 2200kv combo would make this one killer brushless Savage.

I don't think you'd be happy at all with a brushed motor. If you're leaning that way then I'd probably stay with nitro else brushless is the way to go!

Thanks Jam and Woodie, I did see that direct drive after I originally posted. Looks sharp and have read nothing but good things about kershaw.

So you would suggest the Mamba over the Sidewinder? Just asking since this truck is just going to be running around the back yard and not in any sort of competitions.

it's really up to u. if u want the performance of the hpi savage flux, get a mamba monster. the flux motor( I think the call it the "tork" or something like that) and the esc are just rebranded mamba monsters. the sidewinder will give u ok performance, but if u want uncontrollable madness fun, get the mamba.

I also agree with the direct drive. I don't know what u used as a tranny for the brushed, I'm guessing the stock 2 speed. that will work much better( u don't want it shifting on u, it could hurt the motor I think, and it will be impossible to control in first gear).
ur also gonna want to ditch the 18v battery and go with a pair of lipos. venom, turnigy, traxxas, onyx, smc/spc, all are good batteries. ur also gonna want a charger, the onyx dual charger( 245 I belive) is a good but Inexpensive one.

Check the Alza Center diff out also for a conversion.

If you want to stay brushed, the Traxxas EVX2 is waterproof and can handle quite a bit of abuse.

I have to say, the Hobbywing stuff is hard to beat for the price, and the esc are rated to higher amperage

Thanks again for all your input.
Forgot to mention that I did purchase the tranny kit that replaced the 2 speed with a 1 speed since I read that the shifting is not goot on the motors.
Leaning towards the Sidewinder set up right now, just to get it up and running, then upgrade things as I see where it is needed most.

Well, my project just got a jump start. Just ordered my Mamba Monster 2 with 2200KV motor from Amazon. Got a good deal, 250. SO should be here next week and I can continue my project.

Is there another option to convert the 2 speed tranny to direct drive seems everywhere ive looked the kit is sold out or back ordered
