Just bought this today.
Needs electronics and recoil for pull start. First thing first. What model is this. ThxInstasize.jpg

Looks to me like ya scored a Savage X 4.6 with a different engine in it....i think the Big Red is an SH engine.... if pinch is good it outta be a sweet running rig. Good Score !!!

congrats on purchasing a savage x with a Dynamite's Mach 2 "Big Red" .28
youll be wanting to clean and service it, thats my favourite bit

What area should I pay extra attention when it comes apart. Thx
Is there a difference between x and x4.6

you have just a different engine than what a standard savage x comes with thats all, also noticed you might have a steel spur gear which is a kind of up grade from the standard plastic, any way things to check
sorry but id take the engine out to check the clutch and clutch bell bearing, its easy enough job .... oh check the glow plug, take it out and put the glow start on it to see if it glows
spin the wheels ect make sure it all feels smooth, 4 wheel drive is all working and smooth same as the diffs
if all thats tickety boo then soon as all the electrics are linked up test steering, throttle and breaks
if that gets the all clear then fire it up, engine might need a bit of a tune

Note the eight shocks, and radio box ladies and gents'.

It is my guess is this truck was originally a .25/SS that had the X plates added later, could also explain the steel spur.

Edit: I see non-adjustable upper arms, so its not an SS, but it has eight shocks, so it wasn't an X.

Or this has all been changed or the truck was built from parts, either way, it looks pretty solid.

I paid 100 for it and it came with this motor as well. Is it a drop in fit...
Which motor is stronger between these two...thx
Ps: Is this truck worth doing?

with out a doubt, its worth doing up, you did well to get it for that price, you have a hobby now, relax take your time and enjoy it, thats what its about :)

just check both engines over and run them both, youll soon see which one still has some zing left in it
you could strip them completely and and see how much pinch is left in them engines (if you was me you would lol)........ but running them as i said will tell you

oh that engine with the purple head is original engine and will drop straight in

this is what your looking for, if you decide to strip them down
1st pic shows where the piston just starts to pinch
IMAG0145_zps66f9b91a.jpg

2nd pic shows where you just cant push the piston no more, the pinch is too tight
IMAG0146_zps4a9f9afb.jpg

if the piston is able to move right through the sleeve out the top with little or no force then that engine is now an ornament on your man cave shelf, gone to the savage heaven or hell depends on how wicked it was in its past life :D

Ah, thought all X's came with big bores minus the SS.

Suppose a person could have swapped in the old radio box, just don't know why.

Cant really see in the pic but I'm not 100% sure if it has the easy access bulkheads, that would be a dead give-away.

look how the bumpers connect to the side of the towers, thats a give away too

older savages are screwed onto the towers the new savages have plastic clips
with out a doubt its an early savage x

You made a good deal, it would part-out for over that for sure.

The other engine is a HPI Nitro star S-25, probably the original engine to your truck. The better of the two will be the one that runs haha, the Mach 2 is the larger engine of the two for whats thats worth, not sure about it's power output.

I would definitely do that truck up, doesn't sound like it needs much to get it going. Is this your first nitro?

That's what I was looking for but I couldn't tell from the side, thanks for clearing that up.

no worries surly :) tho the point we all been making, and your all are right ................. that is, that truck was worth every penny and worth the time cleaning it up then a nice new shell on top :)

That's an X style electronics box, so it is the new style.

And the engine I'm having a hard time with. It's not a nitro star s-25. The crankcase labeling seems contradictory. It says .25 and 3.5 on the side. Problem is the 3.5 is a .21.

Savage X

The next ready-to-run version was the Savage X. It had a new Force Engine-built 25 motor. The Savage X has addressed the criticisms of the original twin chassis design, which were poor radio box access and difficult access to the differentials. The enlarged radio box is now easier to open and the differentials can now be removed from the new "split bulkhead" design by removing only 6 screws. The new chassis plates lower the motor and transmission slightly to improve GC, and it now includes a standard composite roll bar and detachable roll hoop to protect the engine.

i was puzzled too X but read this ^

Even if that is true, I've never heard of that engine. And information is really minimal. Also, the displacement labeling is still contradictory.

Thanks for all the input.
From what I have gathered, I think I have a Savage X with an unknown spare engine.
Since it is coming apart for inspection and service, what are the prone to fail parts I should swapped out while I am at it?
Thanks

if its all working then just run it, there are no weak spots, a savage is only as good as the controller :)

but ............ if youd like a list of things id buy if i owned it, i would buy the new big bore shocks (plastic) that comes on the latest savage x, adjustable upper arms and if it hasn't got the twin break disk id buy that too, thats just me being a bit fussy

I have to say that I would replace parts as they break. no use in wasting good parts. and @surleyman, it's now a v1 savage x, the motor I haven't heard of, maybe it was origanaly a savage 3.5? ive never heard of an x with an s-25 engine.

That was pending the X TVP's were added later, which has been established as not so earlier in the thread.

Like others have suggested, wait until something breaks before adjusting it. If it breaks determine if it is issue with design, part, and/or user error. IMO the suspension blocks (specifically the b and c ones) are prone to causing damage and often if they do hold up your toe is tweaked. It's a design issue much of it is how the wheel take the brunt impact on bad landings, forcing the a-arms back and the blocks just can't keep up. But ways to combat it (captured hinge pins, stronger blocks, less flex up front and back, etc), Just food for thought. Good luck!

Had a chance to look this truck over. Took the Big Red apart for inspection. The sleeve and piston are like new. Tried to start it. Broke the pull start.
Stuck the 2.5 in. Runs great.
My question is, can the pinch be too tight on the Big Red? If so, how to heck can I get it started?
Thanks

I'm sure it is too tight if it's new, preheat it with a hairdryer or heat gun if you have one.

The rope came off. All the parts are still good.
