One Way Bearing Bad??

I recently put a Rotostart on my K5.9 but before that with the pull start on there, I noticed that when I pulled on the cord, it was slipping a lot. From the sound and feel, it seemed like I was maybe just getting the engine to crank over once maybe twice per pull. After a little work, I could still get the engine running though.

I have the Rotostart on there now, and it's doing the same thing. As the Rotostart is spinning, it seems to be spinning pretty much free, with the engine occasionally turning over. Luckily, it still eventually starts.

From searching around, I'm guessing this is my One Way Bearing that has gone bad and needs replacing? Do you guys agree? And can anyone point out to me the part number for this? I found two very different looking parts that both say "one way bearing" I'm not sure which one I need ... especially now that I'm running the Rotostart ... maybe it's a different part than the one that goes with the pullstart?

I don't know about the part numbers or anything, but it does sound like your one way is letting loose...

Pulling the back plate and attempting to sping it in both directions should confirm it

just take it apart and clean the 1 way bearing, the oil on it makes it slip, I lightly grease my roto shaft and it helps alot, I know I know sounds weird and all but it works well...

yup, thats the part you will need if it is bad, but I am betting cleaning and greasing will fix it....

Grease the roto shaft? I'm not sure what part you're referring to.

I use a bit of red common bearing grease , one can either put a bit inside the owb or grease the shaft that goes thru the bearing, either way will work fine

Jam is correct! Many a one-way bearing has been saved by cleaning it.

I had/have the same problem and was not sure if it was my roto driver or the roto start, I put a new back plate on it and roto yesterday but have not tried it yet

here's something that i'm trying, I drilled a hole through the backplate to the owb, just big enough for a wd-40 tube to fit through. hopfully, when it slips, the wd-40 will take care of it.

No, nut is talking about the plastic cover plate, not the backplate that bolts directly to the crankcase..

yes if one is careful a small 1/8 hole at the top and also one at the bottom of the roto cover will allow a bit of motor spray or wd 40 to be sprayed on a dirty bearing to help get it to catch for starting without removing the engine from the chassis the bottom hole allows excess to drain off and not be trapped in the cover...

tried it out today, as long as u let the spray dry for a minute before u try to start it, it works great. I've been using bearing cleaner, but wd-40 would work just as well, if I had some. time for a trip to my other lhs ( local hardware store )

UPDATE: Removed the OWB today and gave it a good shot with Brake Cleaner and wiped it down really good. I also applied a little grease to the roto shaft. After putting everything back together, I slipped in the Rototstart and it seems to be working. The engine was turning good and strong. Looks like problem solved. Drilling a hole in the plastic cover ... sounds like a good idea.

I am having same problem but mine looks like the rollers came out so the roto just spins free

I had to replace mine as I use a rotor start which can kill a OWB if we're not careful...and I wasn't. When I removed it I noticed it was slipping from a once flooded engine moment. Duh! On my part. I tried cleaning it and letting it dry but found the inner bearing part of the OWB was slipping and loose. I could push it out of the outer collar half way! Since I had a spare I decided to push it thru and it came right out! It seem the bearing collar is friction fit to it's outer hexed collar and had slipped several times shown by some tiny scratches inside the outer collar. FYI...my Savage is a used X4.6 I got from someone. I guess with all those scratches in there, eventually there isn't much 'Grab' anymore?
Not cheap tho these OWB!!! Any cheaper alternatives that can be used??
