Sounds like you don't have an X trans and your trying to pull the whole unit. If you don't have an X you cant follow X vids for trans work. they changed the case to split witout coming out of the chassis. Pre x this is not the same. I'm just guessing I cant follow what youre really doing here.

I'd take a look at the slipper nut for this issue.
Check slipper and clutch and confirm its 100% before you touch the trans. As fred said it can be run both ways ...
That sounds like it is a lean condition and it needs to be enriched as your doing... Could be air leaks could be many things not...
