Hello everyone. A buddy loved my savage so much he dropped 700$ cash on me and said build me one!! I have a ton of spare parts and a few vitals "trans, engine plate, fuel tank, pipe, and suspension"so buying a new one is out of the question. After speaking with him , we came to the conclusion that he wants a very durable "huh its a savage lol" and jump ready truck. I want to build this truck around an axial .28 3 speed set up and am wondering what you guys would do for a truck being built for these reasons. I have been considering the xl frame as i converted my 25 to this and love it but i cant find a roll cage for it and would really like to include one in the build as well . Any and all suggestions and comments/ides welcome i appreciate your knowledge and experience in advance.

Ive just done an X -XL build the links in my sig there might be some ideas there for ya if you decide to go for XL tvp's, i made up a bracket to make the stock X roll bar fit and there are other ways to make it fit if you look through the threads.

I'm sure iv read that Drummerguy/US custom cages makes cages for the XL length, and theres always the option of making up your own custom nylon cage too?

with $700 id first dump the stockers & start with aftermarked TVP's like fastlanes or somethin. building any house must start with a strong foundation.

ya with a $700 budget it should be a awsome build!!!!!! cant wait for the updates..

700 is a sweet budget. you can build a all out nice truck and do better than a axial. I'd go a mid tank FLM big bore RSC build like mine and Fred's trucks. Then sit down with him and have him build the truck with your guidance. Prevent him from being a noob.

+1 on the noob prevention

I'm not so sure on the midtank build don't get me wrong I definatly know it has its advantages but i think I'm going to keep it simple for him. Great advice on the helping him build it idea actually what I was going to do. As for the big bore shocks I had a few questions on that. What is the advantage of 1 big shock over two? I mean doesnt two absorb impact greater then just a single for jumping etc. I was looking at the duel aluminum threaded shocks. thanks for your help and ideas guys.

hen.... a mid tank would be better for a noob.....then he won't have the half tank lean problems. i definitely would't go with that axial with that budget....i'd do an LRP, P3, Or F motor before that one.i would do the Flux big bores....cheaper and just plain smoother than original shocks. the big bore have a bigger shaft than the siingles...saves weight, and less maintenace. aluminum threaded shocks are a no-go in my book...because they WILL strip. i would do some RC Best CVD's off ebay....i ran them on my last savy and LOVED them. the only reason i am not running them now is because i have the XL thicker dogbones.stainless steel brakes are a no-no to me too.....after a hard run the pads slip of and messes up the whole set-up. he needs good servos.....don't go with the cheap ones or u'll be sorry! then i would say decent wheels and tires. just my 6 cents.........

A def with the metal gear servos and spectrom trans. I'm going to check out your shock recamendation does anyone have a direct link to there mid tank build?? would like to check it out. I have heard of the lrp 28 but have heard its a lil finiky to tune ??? I personally have a k 4.6 18/49 geared "if my memory serves me right" and love the all around power it produces. as well as my buddy I'm building for. :loveford: i just put that cuz hay we all love it in real life right

^^^ thats great advice. 1/2 T.L. was by far my biggest frustration with the savage. midtank eliminated it 100%.

here is a link for the larsenracing's mid tank. pm him, you can buy the mid tank plate, servo mounts, battery box, tank & etc from him (he's a vendor here) couple different options for tanks also. https://www.hpisavageforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7604

as far as the lrp .28 'finiky to tune?' the dude who told you that prob had a stock tank & 1/2 tank lean ;).

click the savage x in my sig, itll take you to my build.

tires are a very important part too. go with losi zombie maxx's on maximizer beadlock 1/2 inch offset. great combo.

awsome advice above, because with that amount of a investment on your friends part he should know as much as he can about the truck!!

I had the half tank lean prob. After iinstalling the polished hpi pipe new silicone, a fuel filter, sealing the motor and the fuel tank with the primer and bottom of tank outlet I never had this problem again.Guess I just got lucky ? My biggest and most frustrating prob were my diffs!! Started with the 2 beval gear and plastic cup. What a pain ! I am def dropping metal cupped 4 bevel geared diffs in this build.
Likeing the mid tank guys but I'm still not totally sold on it. I'm just not sure! I'm starting to purchase tonight def getting the fastline frame, bigbores, and lrp motor.

forgot to tell ya...if he is a noob....get the HPI DVD that comes with all the savages now. they advertise there products...but also have very detailed instructions on tuning engine, break-in, adjusting tranny shift points, cleaning......when i bought this last truck i have i thought it was very well suited for first timers.

and by the way ...yea......don't even THINK about the old savage 2 gear diffs.........

ya two gears are trash for sure!!! I have him up to par on the tuning temp and all he has been watching me with mine for about a year now and finally gave in . I'm off to flm to buy the frame, plate, and shock towers now. So it begins!!!!!

my friend just ran his lrp against my 4.6 and there is no comparison. I think he bought it used from this forum and it is so fast and strong. no probs tuning or keeping it tuned.

only other thing you'll need is the the posts that insert into the bulkhead so you can bolt your tvp's on. you'll notice them missing in the pic on the bay.

here are the posts http://storefront.smfstore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=31_91&products_id=988

I'm going to have to get a screw kit anyone have one they have used and prefer. Also concerned about the additional width of the flm frame should this be a concern . was looking at something like this http://cgi.ebay.com/HPI-Savage-XL-Stainless-Steel-Screw-Kit_W0QQitemZ330336693977QQcmdZViewItemQQptZRadio_Control_Parts_Accessories?hash=item4ce999eed9&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1199%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50
