ya I agree that price is way high for what ya get.... I am thinking that lil engine will be workin hard by the look of the vids i have seen..... time will tell if I am wrong , but for now I have to stay with my nitro rigs caz of the power they are known to make.....

At that price the 15cc engine is a joke, let alone how under powered it will be in that chassis. I'll take a flux for that price..........

What? How? Why?

How is it that the K5.9 Big Block found on the HPI Savage 5.9 does the Savage XL just fine then? The K5.9 is only a 5.9cc engine.

Why would an engine that's nearly 3 times the size (15cc) suddenly have a hard time pushing basically the exact same truck?

Maybe watch the video again, from what little sample HPI has graced us with the 15cc engine in the Savage Octane doesn't appear to be struggling to move the truck.

To put it in perspective, the baja has a 26cc engine, and it's still a little under powered. I know the baja is a 1/5 scale, but the xl is definitely a big 1/8 scale.

In the end it's all speculation, but as I said the price is way to much. You can get a baja 5b SS for that price, or a savage flux for a bit less.

Hardly a perspective at all really. You said it yourself, the Baja is a 1/5th scale the Savage Octane is a 1/8th scale. To very different scales! The Baja SS weights in at 21 pounds without fuel, the Savage 4.6 weights in at 15 pounds - I've yet to see what the Octane weights in at but I'll be very surprised to see it weight in at the 20 pound mark so again hardly a comparable perspective.

Sure you can get a Baja for around the $900 mark, but that's the SS model which doesn't include batteries or radio gear. The Octane is Ready To Run.

Yeah the price is a bit steep and isn't for everyone. Then again 1/5th scale is even more expensive and just as much isn't for everyone. Those that have the extra coin to spend and don't want to have to deal with charging multiple batteries for extended run times (Savage Flux) nor want to have the hassle of tuning a nitro engine (Savage 4.6 and XL) the Octane isn't a bad deal. The Baja is a great buggy but most typically spend several hundred making improvements on it which drives the price up even further. The Losi 5T is an even better 1/5th scale but costs nearly twice the price as an Octane. So take your pick.

Power and torque have a lot to do with the transmission gearing, pinion and spur gear.
My Ford F150 has a 6 cylinder in it but is the fastest oem truck in off the line and offers more torque then any other.
Its all about the gearing.

As far as price. If you can afford it, just look and drool. :)

Price isn't that bad if you take a look at the prices of the savage lineup. The "special edition" was/is $800 out the door! Woodie; you said it best! I think the octane is going to do just fine and I can't wait til it's here. I do think it will be a little more sluggish dare I say then the nitro but will more then make up for it in ease of use and run times; and that's not even to mention what the aftermarket will hold for this thing!

"Early May" according to Tower, if that's the case we should see the Savage Octane any day now. :D

Cannot wait! I may get one. The way I'm looking at it is: it is half the weight of my 5th scale, it has a little more than half the horse power of my 5th scale, and the engine is half the size of my 30 cc 5th scale! I mean, all they basically did is put a new powerplant onto an already proven platform. And, I don't have to go anywhere special to drive it. If the new engine has the reliability of my 5th scale, my weed eater, and my leaf blower, all is good!!!

Not to mention the price if fuel will be way way cheaper than nito. One if the reasons I don't run my nitro is the 32 bucks a gallon (might be more or less now been awhile lol) for nitro compared to the now 1.91 a gallon for gas even at the max (here) at over 3 bucks almost 4 still way cheaper. Makes it more affordable to drive.

Yes it's an old thread but I want to say it..lol
