hello all again
i ran 2 tanks through the xl with no problems, until the third time,it started ok,but while it was on idle it locked again up the top,i was using it in the field bought it back in to alter the needle and has i bent down it locked.
i warmed it up it freed off fine and started no problem.
now,its had 3 tanks throgh it,shall i weaken it up abit more and give it abit of stick?ive been carefull with it,paronoide.
the other thing was it started to rain a fair bit,and its cold here at the moment, when it locked,do you think the cold water fallen on the head might have not helped?i thought maybe its cooling too quick??not sure.help would be great,as i dont want to knacker it.while it was going no problem.
thanks again

I would give it a few more tanks before playing with the needles or giving more than half throttle. I have never broken in a 5.9 but alot of engines need a half gallon throught it or more to fully break in.

I agree...I would definately get a few more tanks through it first, just to be on the safe side.

the pinch is "run in" you can start to lean it up. Just dont hammer on it. but you can fully use it at this point.

i have aday off tommorow,so im going to take it out again, ill wack aload of fuel through it,see what happens,i just dont like the fact that it locked after 3 tanks of fuel still,my 25 wasnt any problem, never been any problem in 3 years, ive never had so much trouble braking an engine in,ive had planes where ive run one tank on the floor at full throttle(rich)leaned it out stuck it in the air and its been fine.is it the size of these engines??

Mine could still lock at over half a gal... Keep in mind it not that it is getting stuck that's not what the issue is. Its extra fuel raising the compression. Once you lean it up more it will not do it. That's why I told you one full turn off the base line setting. That only stresses the rod bearings and makes the mill have extra forces at work that need not be there. You piston is lapped in at this point.

ok thanks,i did what you said and wound it in one full turn before i took it out, hoping that would cure it,thats good to know that it will be ok,ill give it a run tommorow.thanks for your help.at least im not the only one to have this problem.

Keep in mind at one full already you may be close to being tuned. Depending on conditions you may be another 3/4's away from going lean. That is a ball park not fact. So as you lean it up go slow now. 1/8 turns at a time. You can take it to a full tune and adjust you lsn when you are done with the HSN. Also mind you I didnt tell you to touch the LSN it is still fat and will load the mill to lock at around idle to 1/4 throttle. That could have been why you locked up.

How new to nitro are you?

well im 33,been flying planes since i was 13,stopped that, went to electric cars for a while,my father is plane mad,and he used to do the running in and stuff, the cars ive had about 4 years(nitro)
the first was a rex-x,i was naughty really,i ran one tank in then i leaned it out and it was fine, the 25 i done as per the book without issues, now ive bought this one now,to be honest ive never had any problems with them thats why im abit lost now lol.
Ive done everything you have said, and its been ok,the first time it did it i thought that was it,but thankfully you put me right.so im not too worried now, just wanna get passed this stage,i havent altered the lsn yet,i was gonna do the hsn first, but its jucking out some oil,its still rich as a pig to be honest,im using o-donnell fuel,i used to use tornado but this is all they had, trying to get fuel around here is a nitemare,i could do with taking the heat gun with me and warm it up,but ill have to put the generator in the car, might be worth it??
not an ideal day today, rained all day,but having the day off i was itching to get it out.
thanks bud
i couldnt speak to much on the shoutbox, its nearly 2 am here and i goto get some sleep.

Lucky i stumble across this thread last night. A dude at work has the exact same problem with a K4.6 that came with his SS a week ago. Took off the air filter & glow plug & drained the fuel, turned the HSN 1 full turn to lean & WHAMMO!!!!!!!. it kept getting stuck, but not any more. worked like a charm. Sending along a thank you to Bank from Rob at my work. :rock:Bank rulz
