Which do you prefer?

I'm on and off. My MT2 is my first Nitro truck. When I first got it I didn't want the roto I wanted the pull. It seemed funner to pull the cord. And I hated lugging it around. All you needed with the pull was the glow starter. Then my friend's pull started messing up and my roto works fine. I have a pull on order at my LHS but I don't know if I'm going to buy it now. Roto has been great other then lugging it around and charging batteries. So I think in the end I like roto start better.

pull start is nice on a tuned motor, but can be a hand killer on the untuned. I had bad luck with pull starts(breaking)...

long live the pullstart!! its scheap and most of the times it works fine.. and you don't need to bring a xtra bag with you for just the rotostarter and maybe en xtra battery...

pull start definately.
it`s much cheaper and I don`t like finding out that I forgot to charge the rotobattery when I want to go driving, the pullstarter always works as long as you make sure that you got a spare one.

I agree with all of you about bringing around the roto start. It's so annoying. But I had no choice at first, and then I got used to it. So I like it now but I still might get that pull start I have on order.

i voted pullstart.

i have gone through 3 rotostart's since june 23rd, first one the gears got stripped so i took it back to the shop i got my truck at and they gave me a new one, and on that one the motor screwed up, so i took it back and they fixed it for me and then the gears stripped again. I sent an email to HPI and they sent me a new rotostart which i have as a backup, just incase i am out at the lake and my pullstart breaks.

Wow, that is some bad luck with a Roto Start. Mine has been good, I just hate the batteries. I ruined one already by forgetting it was in the charger. But I have 4 so it's not a problem.

I changed the rotostart to a pull start. i broke a gear in the roto start.
with a flooded engine you have the most problems with th rotostart...

My rotostart from my savage 21(2 years old) still works flawlessly, as well as my rotostart from my current Savage 25 LE.

rota start why bother with all that pulling i dont understand why anybody would choose pull start there well anoying and my roto start never fails and the battery lasts for ages n ages

I would say roto start. My friend used to have a pull start and it would get all tangled and just anoying. When he finally got a roto start he started enjoying his truck a little more. i don't mind carrying it around because i always have a tool kit with every thing in it. I think that it would take som of the power out of your engine too. So i will have to go with the roto start.

roto start just got even better for me no more charging two batteries or carrying a glow warmer and 1.2v battery works like a charm

The new motors these days or the big blocks i guess they are called...have an internal oneway bearing for starting the engine..and it does not take to much hammering with a rotostart before the shaft wears out in the engine(collari .30) and the one way will fail to grip on it any more...and all those little fileings have now made their way down through my engine where they can't be any good for any bearings or ports...so i have switched all mine to pull start now.

my 2 cents.

ive gone through 3 or 4 pull starts and wasted my time trying to pull start my car. Roto start all the way

I've been thinking about switching to pull start. That way I can start my Savage when it dies out away from my pit area. But that never has really happened to me. I've already toasted a one-way bearing with my rotostart but I think that was because 2 of the 3 screws came out of my rotostart plate.

If My roto start starts giving me problems I will switch to a pull start. I never had any problems with my NMT pull start, and once I got the truck tuned it would start on the first pull pretty consistantly.

Starter box! :-)

But between pullstart and Roto Start, however, I'd probably go with pullstart.

pullstart because you don't have to lug that damn thing around one less thing to cary

to all who dont like lugging a rotostart around-huh!? they aint that heavy! it does require a bit iof a nack, i find. five seconds with finger over the exhaust, attatch glow starter, pulse the rotosart, for like one second one, half a second off. my 46 starts nine times out of ten on the second, the other time on the third! i have not has a problem with a pull start, apart from an old cord breaking-but i am lazy and rotostarts work lovely for me! i mean how many normal cars come with cranking handles!! lol! :buttshake:

Rotostarts AAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!! If its not the button getting jammed or the batterie dying the one way is stripped. just give me a good old fashioned pull start. Oh and you dont have to carry a pull start around with you. ;)

I guess i have to agree with darkshine. Its not that heavy and i got sick and tired of the cord beaking. I always carried a spare pullstart with me but who wants yank the motor while your buddies are out bashing.

I'm about done with pullstart. It's been nothing but a headache between the gunked up OWB and the cord breakage on the pullstart. I understand the feel you get from the pullstart, being able to sense and feel pinch, flood, slippage, whatever. On the other hand to me its not worth it to sit there fumbling with the pullstart for 20 minutes in the cold while my buddies with ez/spin start are buzzing around the track.

Plus another advantage is being able to start the truck on somewhere else besides the ground or a low table. At our local track we have wood rails to see your vehicle on which are fairly high. Forget getting leverage to yank on the pullstart at that height. I'm all about having less to do, for me at this point. Holding down the truck + finger over exhaust + pull slip slip pull slip pull + insert glow igniter + hold truck down again + pull slip pull pull pull slip pull slip pull pull pull pull pull pull... yea im done.

long live the pull start. i have one with and one without and i love the pull start less to pack up when i load up the trucks and less to carry around less to remember to charge.

I have a roto start and its been giving me problems from day 1,
The roto will spin but not motor, theres oil, grease or sopmething coming from back plate, which I have no idea what that is Ive already replaced the OWB and still same thing so Im gonna switch to a pull start and hope fully that will work better

Sealed my motor? I would have to say no because I dont know what your talking about. the only thing I ve done was take back plate off replace OWB and put back together .I havent taken engine apart or anything

theres a oring in between engine and back plate could fuel get past that if oring is warn out

The rotostart has cost me 3 OWBs and 2 backplates with the shaft at a cost to repair of $100. Since using the pullstart it has cost me $0. Charging the rotostart was a PITA anyway and lugging it everywhere with you...

oregonmud
03-03-2007, 11:09 AM
Haryhood it sounds to me like you have flooded your engine (like me) and toasted your OWB. You can take it out and soak it in WD-40 and that will save them most of the time. Otherwise you need to replace the OWB and maybe the backplate and shaft that the OWB goes on.

haryhood
03-03-2007, 12:16 PM
if i change to a pull start can i use the same OWB that was used for the roto start or are there 2 differnt types

oregonmud

Same one thats the beauty of it. You can always keep the roto in case you dont like the pull. Or sell the rotostart like I did for $50
