Here is what one looks like
and yes buy the temp gun it is the only true way to tell what your motor is doing think of it this way say you save your motor from overheating all the time because of the temp gun then how much $$$ did you save becasue your motor lasted that much longer just my $.02 take it for what you will

YES!!! You need one to tune your truck properly. Without it you could be reaching temps over 350* and not know it. Especially with a savage and it's half-tank lean issue. The old "spit test" is very innacurate and doesn't really work.
I very much recommend buying one and using it at least 4 times per tank. You will be shocked at how high your temps can get after 1/2 tank ;)

Duratrax flashpoint is like $20, and mine still works after a couple years of abuse.

i am using the venom heat safe sensor but as i found out today if you dont have it set in the right place on the head its not as acurate as a heat gun. luckly it was shoing 40* high and not low. so i raised iton the head and it seams to bea bit more acurate. plus it has a volt meter and radio savor bulit into it to and it was only 40 bucks. just a little tricky to set some of the fetures.

yup.
they`re not such a massive investment, rebuilding your engine cause it is overheated & jammed costs you way more.
I`m gonna pick up a new set of axles for my tranny tomorrow and I will pick up a temp gun as well.

Temp guns are way to cheap not to have one (compaired to a new engine). I picked mine up at the LHS for $20. I check the temp at least 4 times a tank. When I first start my truck I dont even run half throttle til it hits 160 degrees.

Buy a replacement tank that doesn't change shape halfway down or run a header tank.

Buting a tempreature gun is the best thing you can do and is money well spent and will save you alot of strife when it comes to finding out your engine tempreature instead of touching your cooling head and burning your finger heres one by duratrax that reads in farenheit and celcius its the same one i have for only $24.99US
heres a pic and the website to buy it
