They are both about the same truck to be honest. The X is the newest one out now(I think). The X has a stronger engine in it, lower center of gravity(not much), and the diffs are easier to get to. The radio box was also redesigned. I have the X so I happen to like it a little bit more.

But you will have alot of fun with whatever one you get.

the 3.5 is OK.
it has the same chassis as my SS4.6, the only things that are different are:
the 4 gear diffs,
the double disc brake
and the engine.
when I was looking for my first rc monstertruck I wanted to buy the savvy X but there was only a RTR version available and I want to build my own cars.
I wanted a BEAST of a monstertruck so the best kit available for me was
the SS4.6.
the X has easy acces diffboxes and that`s why I wanted it.
the X drivetrain & suspension will fit your 3.5 also.
if you break the suspension arm replace it by an X suspension and diffboxes.
my advice is just keep your 3.5 and replace any parts you break by better parts.
after a while your 3.5 will look more like an X than a 3.5 if you know what I mean.
as soon as I can get alu bulkheads, diffboxes, braces and diffs for the X I will transform my SS4.6 into an X SS4.6.
the first thing that I would upgrade if I were you are the brakes.
the double disc brake is fantastic!
It brakes without fading ( that is if it`s adjusted the right way ).
if you decide to upgrade the engine, first replace the 2-gear diffs by the 4 gear diffs, or get full alu 4 gear diffs.
check the HPI site if you want to know exactly which X parts will fit your 3.5.

I thought that they they started putting it in all the trucks now, the older trucks didn't have it but the new ones do. I think they have been using the 4 gear diffs in all the savages made for the past year or so(maybe longer).

D'oh *slaps head*

I've just posted a 3.5 or X thread and now I notice this one! Oh well. Soz!

All your input is useful, thanks guys. One question I have is that nobody talks about the reverse options for the trucks. Do any of you bother?

a reverse module can be dangerous.
imagine a savvy running at 35 mph and accidentally you touch the reverse button.......
not all savages have this problem but if you have a 3 channel radio system like mine it can be dangerous.
www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=HPI861
check this link, you`ll find a savage X ss 4.6 there.
I couldn`t find it on the HPI site so I typed `savage X ss 4.6` in google and this is one of the thousands of links available.

I don't have reverse on my savage X yet, but I will more then likely end up getting it. My LHS doesn't carry it yet.

trashard

my lhs has dozens of them in stock but I`m too afraid to put one in.
I really don`t want all my gears to be scattered in a 10m circle after accidentally pressing the reverse button.
the 3rd servo button is very close to your thumb and when I`m driving I constantly feel my thumb rubbing it.
If only they located this button on top of the radio.........

They have the reverse module for the savage X or the original reverse? On the X we have to buy one that comes with a mixer.

trashard
07-03-2006, 12:07 PM
yup that`s the safe one, your savvy must come to a complete stop before it shifts into reverse.
my radio will simply shift it into reverse when I hit the button.
I`m not sure but I don`t think there are 2 different reverse mods, it`s just the way they`re operated.
they can be operated by a 2ch radio with a splitter, or they can be operated by a 3 ch radio like mine.
I only don`t know if the splitter is on the radio or if it`s in the reverse mod itself.
if it`s in the reverse mod itself I`m gonna pick up one too!!

Kewl guys,

I am getting it in 2weeks :D, I think I am going to be happy with it, because it's my first HPI Monster Truck so I wont know the difference between this and the other savages.

oh I am going to be getting the reverse module for it couple weeks after I have gotten the truck, the cheapest I have found is $100AU which doesn't seem too much. The thing I want to know is, How do you reverse, like do you press a button on the control and use the throttle to go, or is it different way? and how hard is it to put in and do I need to buy another servo, the control I am getting with it has 3 channels.

Again I cant wait to get this thing out, for the next 2 weeks I am going to be reading break in tutorials, because of course I want the motor to run good.

I will defiantly be posting pic's of it when I have it and video of it also.

I have also been looking up Helicopters now, I love them also and yeah I know they are the hardest R/C's to run, but I will be practicing alot before I get anything highend.

by the time I am , arrgh lets say 25-30yrs old (18 now), I more likly will have lot's of R/C's from Helicopters, planes, hovercrafts, buggy's like the Baja 5, which I saw today , which looks INSANE!!!!, cant wait to get one of those things, but for the time been I am happy with me Savage.

Well see yous around, and sorry for the long reply.

I used to say that when I was 18, now I`m 30 years old I found out that I can`t afford them all together.
I`ve been wanting a nitro heli for over 10 years but it`s too expensive around here in holland and there are too much regulations.
my sisters backyard is more than 100 m total length but if the police catches me with any type of flying model they`re gonna take it away and I`ll never see it back.
another dream of mine is a 1/6 rc tank but I want one out of aluminium and steel and they`re VERY expensive.
the 1/6 scale tiger 1 from armortek costs more than 5000 usd, that is ex customs & shipping fee........
I have seen an online vid a few years ago and it showed a 1/6 WWII kingtiger
with two 24 volt pallettruck engines, that thing was MEAN.
it was capable of towing a mini-cooper and ran at almost 10 mph.
the lenght with the gunbarrel inluded was more than 2 metres and it weighed almost 200 kg( about 120 kg for the batteries).
too bad I don`t have a link, if I had it I would have posted it long ago....

On topic I have to say get the X SS 4.6 if you are really serious. Then buy a decent radio. in australia rc-shop.com.au has the xss kit for 650. Than pick your radio. the stock savage one ain't great.

I've just got myself a X SS 4.6 and I love it, any fears about building it went away after reading the manual. All pretty simple and great fun!

My savage X SS was the first nitro truck I bought and only the second kit I've put together. It was very straight forward to build and I think that you may end up wanting more if you buy the 3.5 if your anything like the rest of us!
