Well I had the unfortunate happen last night at stock settings and around 20 min of total run time on truck.

I was driving behind my just about to be 6 year old on her bicycle and the truck dead stops. So I release the trigger and hit it again and bammmmm Smoke comes rolling from under the body. I'm like ban-ban-ban-ban-!!!!! So I go running over to it yank the clips throw the body off, and switch to off. Grabbing the truck by back bumper I grab it and carry to my driveway where I set it down. Then begin to look closer and see that the battery box's are FAT. So I grab the Velcro strap from around the cases and pop open the cases and grab the wires and pitch them down the drive way as far as I could fast. Risking my life, LOL. So here are the pictures and be sure to read the rest below.

Now I think threw the situation and come to the conclusion that it had to be the ESC that caused the whole thing. Because it it was one cell it would be 1 cell not all 4. So I decide i'm ganna call Bryan at SMC this morning. So I did he answerers the phone and I have a 15min conversation with him and he confirms my thinking. This was cased because the ESC Shorted and caused the battery's to fail and the ESC to melt. Like he stated battery's wont kill and ESC but the ESC can kill the battery's.

I appreciate Bryan very much because he is sending me new packs so thanks to SMC and Bryan. Great work.

I then call HPI and talk to Travis he was great as well and has a new ESC on the way to me.

So all in all I have been taken care of but it's still the point. Be careful, i'm sure this is a fluke deal.

How & where did it short? Wires contact each other inside the case?

I'm not sure I just added another photo I thought I had in there.

Do you have another esc you can test the motor with. Shorts rarely kill motors but it can happen.

I do but this one is out of warranty as its from my brothers BL e-revo. I guess I will have to wait and see when the ESC comes in and if it's dead I will have to call back and get that.

I hope it didn't hurt it.

Ya glad it didn't burst into flames. I'm glad it just smoked up and stinks. When HPI gets the packaged ESC and opens it up I sure would hate to be the guy that cuts that box open and gets the first wiff, LOL.

wow man, im glad no one got hurt.

any way you ask hpi to know what caused it? a 'short' is generally gonna happen when the poles touch so im wonderin if knowing the cauz would help others.

Man, those packs! Im glad no one got hurt!!!!!

I've never seen packs puff up that big, ever. WOW.

I said the same thing, just ask Justin as I called him ust after this happened and told him these things are as big as they can get. See his first post as those were the first pictures he was of this. He was amazed as well.

Sorry Fred I didn't really ask them what they thought it was. It was a very quick with little speaking involved conversation with HPI and the new one is on its way. They said ESC will be shipped today or monday. Bryan stated that the packs will be on there way as soon as they come in, most likely on Monday.

Of course my kid saw the whole thing and was like whats going on dad. I had thrown the packs and she wants to go look at them so I kept telling her to get away, far away.

Ok, maybe open up the new esc case when it arrives caz B/A did and the wire inside was pinched/crimped and i think i recall bank saying the same thing.

Maybe they crimped it during assembly and it eventually touched and cauzed the short.

since we've seen it on 2 trucks maybe there is a snafu in there assembly process & im wondering if this has been the culprit in many other similar situations.

O ya now I gatta dispose of them. Byran stated that he had heard Radio Shack will take them so I may call them. Otherwise a recycling facility which we have in town that will most likely take them.

He also said I could put them into a bucket of salt water making sure they were fully submerged including the leads for a day to a day and a half and they would be completely dead. Then toss them into the garbage. He did state the best way was to take to radio shack or recycling center for the best alternative.

I may just do this so long as I can do it with out wrecking the warranty. Like pealing off labels or something.

we can always call hpi customer-service and ask Travis or Luis first. Because im thinking we should compile pictures if we get a few of them & make them aware of the situation so they can head off the problem upstream? theyd prolly appreciate it.

Mamba has instructions on their website of how to take the esc case apart. So how could that void a warranty?
