well i cant answer all of you questions but will comment, the dog bones will fit those cups, no problem on the trans or outerdrive cups.
If your going all black get a set of oem shock springs (black) and get rid of the red ones.

NITROMITE
10-14-2009, 11:32 AM
can you say carbon fiber? thats the way to go if you want all black plus it shaves weight.

on another note i just switched my 21 diffs over to the xl diffs and found alot of stuff to change so i am the man for that topic i just got it finished last night
it took 2 months to get done do to the parts i dident think i would need

to do it right you will need

1. xl bulk heads

2. xl dog bones

3. Xl bulk braces

4. xl out drive cups regular or extended (i got the ext and love them)

5. xl diffs

6. xl shock towers

you can use the center dog bones and cups or switch them to the x not xl
hit me up if you have any questions

M0rphin3
10-14-2009, 11:40 AM
Im confused here, are you going from 21 diffs to x diffs or xl diffs, if your just going to x then your ok, if going with xl diffs talk to nitromite

Hypnotiq

i order from RC Planet a lot, but if you want to save $20 on a set of tires, you may want to check this link out: http://www.tcscrawlers.com/HPI-Racing-Phaltline-Tire-140x70mm-2pcs-4886-p-17902.html

please be warned, i've recently read that the above company, not RC Planet, does not support this forum and, instead, have tried to bribe the forum admins (members?) to promote their products. just a heads up.

I-Hate-Traxxas
10-16-2009, 02:37 PM
how big of tank you thinking? If you want the ofna 220cc tank the mother of all tanks you can't use the FLM mid plate you would have to find your own way to mount it or get Jasons mid plate (you CAN'T use the older bulks you need X bulks or newer for mounting the 220cc). I myself like the clean look of the Cen/Mugen tank mod. But other people like the Hellfire, MGT, etc.. look around and find what you like best.

@nitromite, I'm debating cutting the front out kinda like a square and leaving just the hpi part aong the top.

Bad news... Everything showed up except those dam diffs... Errrr.. Says forest park so there only about 60-70 miles away!

yep those are the parts i was mentioning and i think with the xl only 1 needs to be notched. they are easy to mod if you have a round file or a dremil . you only need to remove enough to clear the dog bone

Yeah when the blasts arrived in the packages i said.. OH man!! These are gonna look hot! Thanks londoner!

Midtank... Well when i was at the LHS i picked these up RPM servo mounts (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXEU69&P=FR) Gonna give them a try. I was thinking about making my own plate for the tank and mounting my steering servo to the side of the chassis. I still have no idea what tank to even go with. MY LHS doesn't have many and i wanna make sure i order the right one. Other than that the linkage should be rather easy. Ill keep you guys posted!! Thanks for all the C&C!

Also i have a black wing coming.. Should i mount it or leave it as is? I kinda like this look.

Londoner
10-21-2009, 10:12 AM
Sounds good, you may wanna integrate your steering servo into the mid tank plate though, i couldnt find a way of mounting it to the XL TVP without making up some sort of plate to mount to the TVP first but you may be more inventive than me and pull it off lol

The wing comes down to preference i guess, if you like it off leave it off, i love running a wing, it helps keep your head from touching the ground too, but youl need to cut your body to mount it though iv found having the wing really helps protect the body from damage at the rear.

Thanks for the advise on the steering servo.. I do want the wing i do have a black one on the way i just didn't wanna cut the body. I might end up doing it. Thanks alot! I was having a tuff time with her yesterday tuning and trying to figure out why she would die right after id give it full throttle. After inspecting it for leaks and what not i found some fuel on the buttom of the cooling head then on my fuel line. I re tightened down my cooling head and replaced the fuel tube.. nothing. Come to see something dangling from my exhaust head. Then found this...

I know i need to.. I just haven't yet.. Kinda wanna cut out the entire windshield from under the HPI windshield decal. Just kinda tossing ideas around so it still looks good.

New wing mount is a wrap. Mounting from the shock holes to the bottom where the shock tower screws into the diff.

Quick question guys...

I bought this servo saver (http://www.hpiracing.com/products/en/87197/) installed it and my Jr Z590M servo will only turn it in one direction. Doesn't have the power to turn the other direction. I had to remove it and put my stock one from my 21 back in. MY question is how many oz of torque do you need to turn one of these? I do wanna upgrade my servo but don't have the funds for a hundred dollar one.

Pope

I had that set up for a few months and never had an issue except for when I put it in at first I put the arms on the servo saver the wrong way around. the 590 is 85 oz but it will get the job done. Good luck getting it right.

P.S. I love the truck.

I couldnt for the life of me figure out why i couldnt brake at all... I thought.. humps dead.. Charged and checked... nothing. So i took the brakes off come to find that hex was completely stripped and the pad was just spinning around it. Since i was still using a .21 brake set i upgraded to the Savy X setup.. Needless to say i am VERY PLEASED! Can we say endo?! lol

Rant....

After bashing for about an hour or so... Just ripping in the street... Broke yet again another servo case.. I am sooo FED up with this.. that makes 3 cases broken. I have to figure this issue out.

Hey Mike,

It might be a good idea to get some door screening and gluing it around the window and grill. This will keep the airflow going but help keep most dirt and stones out.

Well i have some major adjusting to do with my tranny and i am starting to believe my clutch shoes are not biting.

Current plans...

Dynamite Max-Life shoes (http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/products_id/10016/n/Dynamite-Max-Life-Aluminum-Clutch-Shoe-Set) (props justin) Ordered
Racing Clutch Bell 17 T (http://www.hpiracing.com/products/en/77107/)
HD Spur Gear 47 T (http://www.hpiracing.com/products/en/77127/)

Might have a deal on a 3Speed Tranny... just need to looking into if the high speed third gear is installed. I dont believe it came out of an XL.

Question:

How difficult is it to change out the clutch shoes? Should i be ordering new springs as well? IF so which do you recommend?

How did you mount the screen so that it did not work loose? I like that idea a lot - since I am going to need a body soon,. this will help me keep it in one piece and not have to hack it to pieces :)

Anyone every try using an air duct to help channel air over the cooling fins?

As far as the clutch springs go you can use the stock ones however I noticed that the Dynamite max-life shoes have a small bump on them to give clearance between them and the flywheel so the hpi springs can't reach the groove in the nut very well. I'm running them and they do hold but you can pull the shoes off very easily which doesn't seem good. I have run several tanks on them with no issues though.

I have been playing around with all different things with my truck to get it wheellying consistently. Tried different fuel, plugs, max-life clutch shoes, etc. I have an XL with the 5.9 in it still. I'm running Sidewinder 30% nitro, 10% oil with a medium cold plug. I have it wheelying pretty good now, but I notice that having my shocks softer makes it harder to wheely. I have the adjustable aluminum bodied shocks and I notice that if I stiffen all the shocks it helps get the torque to the chassis better. Otherwise the shocks soak up most up the chassis movement. My engine is running very strong now and my cltuch seems to be grabbing better. I am now seeing the traction as the weak point for getting the front end up. It seems to spin the terra-pinns everywhere now. Pavement and grass both. If the tires grab enough, it picks the front end up form a stop now, which is basically all I wanted. I don't want the front wheels to constantly be in the air, but it's nice to show off once and a while LOL.

Thanks for the reply mike...

I am doing the following things to get this started..

Dyanmite Max-Life shoes
Mugen 1.0mm springs
17T HD clutch bell
47T Steel Spur
220Cen tank (mid-tank)
Radio box behind the mill
Hump back behind the mill
Throttle / Brake servo to rear (midtank)

Basically trying to transfer some weight to the rear of the truck. Talked to a few of the guys in the shout the other day and tossed some ideas around.. this might work other than me not knowing where im gonna mount the steering servo without a plate. Just gonna go with two aluminum motor mounts one on the servo saver one by the tranny.. I believe savagesam runs that setup for his midtank.

How did that hump pack ever work out for you hyp? How long do they last you before they need charging? They were 2700mah right? I'm using the 1200mah still but I got a 1600 coming for super cheap brand new from max amps. I think it was like $16 and I had a $10 coupon from them in my email. Ahem :clears throat:

Well after trying out and holding a few different radios i went with the Spektrum DX3S on Wednesday. Finally got a chance to tinker with it yesterday after installing the Telemetry temp sensor for the cooling head. After preheating i used my gun vs my radio and my radio was off my 2 degrees. So i took her out for a minute to test my 3 speed shift points. I must say it does feel a little more responsive. No problems at all with turning or trigger.. everything seems to be on point just with a better feel with this beautiful controller in my hand. After running for about 5-8 mins a overheat warning came up on the LCD when the mill hit 220F. I said.. well i don't like that.. Looking into how to remove that now. Gonna give the RPM sensor a shot this evening.. Might as well use this thing to its full potential.

Any questions?

I noticed the springs as well, they look nice. As for the tranny settings, I had to do mine by feel. It didn't shift right out of the box so I took it apart and put it to the factory specs but that didn't work for me either. It was going from 1st to 3rd. For some reason second was way too tight at "factory" specs. I don't know if I have a funky spring in there or what but the second time I took it apart I just used a small flathead screwdriver to open up the clutch piece for each gear and that's when I figured out that 2nd had way more tension. So I readjusted both gears until second had tension that felt like it was in between the other two gears and then tested it. It was using all three gears at that point and all it took was one more time into the tranny to fine tune 2nd, since 3rd can be done outside the truck. It works great now but for some reason the factory settings were way off for mine.

Let me know how you like that gearing. Now that I have my LSN issues worked out and the new dynamite max-life clutch shoes in the XL is wheelying like a champ and keeping temps around 235-245 degrees even on a low (stock) fuel tank. If I'm moving too quickly it doesn't wheely too hard but it will pick the front wheels up like 3-4" and take off though. Anything under like 15 mph though and it will flip right over even with the HPI wheely bar on, if I hit too hard. I'm using the 16/52 combo but wouldn't mind experimenting with my gears a little. It does seem to get really good top speed even with those gears though. Just about as fast as my touring car with a 2 speed in it on flat pavement. Plus, the savvy can go that fast pretty much everywhere LOL.

By the pic it looks fine to me. I loosened my slipper a very tiny amount before but I'm gonna tighten it down completely and see what happens. I thought it may have been causing me a problem but I don't think it was after all so I'm gonna snug it back down. You should get really good top speed with the smaller spur, especially with the phaltlines on, but I don't how much gain you will see. I know guys with really powerful mills run even higher gears cause they can get away with it. 17/47 seems to be a common setup from what I've read here.

Normally I don't go for wild marketing gimmicks but I'm a believer, just because I have always run sidewinder in my HPI Super Nitro RS4 and it still has the stock .15 in it 6 YEARS later and it still runs like champ. Never used ARO in it once, over the years, and it was stored in a garage for most of that time. I'm pretty happy with the stock 16/52 gears in the XL for now, it gives me good wheelies at low speeds and still seems fast to me on the top end. I might try 17/49 or even 19/49 if I get a new mill though.

Are you going to try an engine plate, or are you talking about the cross-members that go under the engine plate? You can use those cross-members and then just cut and drill your own piece of aluminum for really cheap. But then you'll need cut and drill another small plate to mount your T/B servo where the stock tank used to go.

Yeah my plan is the following...

Take cross members and use them as stands for the tank.. one over the servo saver and other by tranny.. ( i think the tanks longer) Use flat alum on the tvps to mount the servos.. i may just told off and buy the midtank with the TVPS and then it would make things real easy.

MikeK1981
12-04-2009, 12:05 PM
I've seen plenty of people do a mid tank on the cheap. You want the tank to sit right on the cross members? You could always use a plate on the cross members first as a platform for the tank to sit on, then use some nuts and bolts to make mounts for the tank similar to what the PRC mid tank plate has standing up off of it.

Hypnotiq
12-04-2009, 12:07 PM
yeah i was thinking like the cross members with like whatever i needed to come out with to mount the tank then the center would be empty. Does that make sense?

MikeK1981
12-04-2009, 12:13 PM
Yeah it makes sense. Never seen it done that way. If the opening underneath is too big it may cause a problem if something puts any weight on the top center of the tank. I have heard these ofna 250's crack easily and have seen a few pics of broken ones that were only in minor wrecks. Just something to consider.

A full plate would give a little more support for the tank and help prevent any flexing in the plastic.

Ok.. so maybe thats not such a good idea then. lol. I think im gonna wait till i get the TVPS so i have all the servo holes ready and things will be much easier. Let me add up how much FULL carbon will come out to :O

They make this kit with the TVP's and a skid plate:

http://www.platinumrcproducts.com/prc%20118.html

A little cheaper getting this way.

MikeK1981
12-04-2009, 12:34 PM
Then this for a plate. I think he said he has most of the smaller stuff as well like the 250 tank, battery boxes, and the ofna likages and flm servo mounts if I remember correctly.

I added it up before and I was gonna get everything I need from him to do a mid tank including the servo plate and all the small stuff for $114 including the shipping. Add the $147 for the chassis kit and it is around $261 plus maybe a little more shipping for the chassis, I know some of his prices changed a tiny bit since then so you'll have to add it up to get an exact quote from his site. He was only gonna charge $6 at the time to ship all that stuff minus the chassis.

Cool I modded my stock XL body to accept these little LED flashlights that we got for free at this dinner we went to. Each one has 3 blue-white LEDs and are quite bright. The best part is no wiring required, just click them on and off with there own buttons, they come off with the body, and they were the exact same size as the headlight stickers so you can't even tell they aren't stock LOL.

I don't know, powdercoating is pretty tough and if your running mostly on-road with those phaltlines your probably not going to hit it many things that are gonna scratch it, something like a curb would but...
