Ok first off this will be a TRAIL VEHICLE ONLY!

This is the info I have on the Jeep.

It is a 1987 Jeep
Cherokee with a 1994 rebuilt motor. The tires are 31X10.50” Dunlops and
the spare is a 30X9.50” off brand. The tires should be replaced within
a year. I tore the carpet up in the back because it is ruined and found
some rust. There are 4 half dollar size holes that you can patch if you
want but I would leave it so water can drain out if you take it off
road. I drilled a few 1/4" holes in the floor boards to drain water but
the mats cover them up. The jeep is not clean just because it will take
some time to get all the mud out and I never minded having dry mud on
the floor. I was going to "Rhino Line" the whole interior but my funds
ran out so that’s why I took the carpet out. I'm not going to pay the
school $25 to weld up a hole that will 5 minutes. You can get it done
for free, but I included a picture of it. It has dual Flowmasters, the
only Jeep in town that has dual mufflers that I've seen. The
transmission, this is the 4th one I've put in it and I refuse to do
another one. When the Jeep is cold it will has 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and
sometimes 4th, but once it heats up it only has 1st and 2nd. I’ve
talked to many different people and they said to change the filter and
fluid and it should be fine. Well I did that last week and it didn’t
change anything. I don’t know what it is; it could be as simple as a
modulator valve or as complex to another transmission. I loath
transmissions, so I will not do another one. The junk yard downtown,
Pull a Part, has them for $70 with a 30 day warranty. The engine is
pretty solid, I have changed the oil every time I take it off road,
except this last time, and I just didn’t get to it. I bought it rebuilt
for $900 April of 2008, and I haven’t had a problem with it. It is
probably due for a full tune up; I would have to look at my receipts to
see when I bought the last one. I have most of the receipts for things
I’ve bought for it. The jeep does need shocks and sway bars. The shocks
on it are not for a 3” lift so they are stretched out. It makes some
noise when you hit bumps from the sway bar in the front hitting the
brush guard. I spent $450 on the brush guard and 300 on the safari
rack. Spent 200 on the lights on the rack and they do work. I have
covers for the lenses. It has a new starter and a relatively new
alternator both should be under warranty. The belt is less than a week
old. The ignition is messed up on it. It does not require a key but you
have to turn the switch and push a button to start it. It is very
difficult to start and I’m the only person that can do it with ease,
but that’s because it’s my Jeep. If unable to start from the push
button you have to take a screw driver or some kind of metal object and
touch the two bolts on the solenoid, I’ll show you how to do it. That
is not hard, just annoying, I’m not sure how much it cost to fix it,
never looked. It has no power steering either; I believe it needs a
power steering pump, never cared enough about it. I believe the pulley
is going out and it randomly makes a squeaks. The windshield is cracked
and spider webbed after a chain snapped when I was trying to pull
someone out of mud. That is all the negative things I can think about
it. It is a good jeep and it has proven it’s self to me time after
time. Its tough and anything that breaks is rather easy to fix. Jeeps
can use the same parts from many different makes and years. It can be a
good vehicle when treated right but if you are looking for a toy, then
this is it. Its fun and holds up great in the mud. Let me know after
you talk to your parents if you are interested or not, but I’m asking
for $800 since it’s not in perfect shape, but I’ve invested a couple
thousand dollars in it over the years with all the different
modifications and parts, but I know I’ll never get what I put in it, I
just need a better car for travel.

They want $800 for it, I figured offer him around $500 for it and max of $700

i worked on an 87 not to long ago and the tank likes to leak around the tank straps and the fuel pump and the over flow bottle likes to build up pressure and crack the tank for the anti-freeze. also watch the dual electric fans cuz they like to glitch out bad and burn up the contacts in the motors but the 4x4 part of it is really strong also check the body mounts do to they rust really quick and the rubber bushings like to tear out.

The XJ is a unibody last I looked.

Parker the XJ series is a very capable offroad vehicle. Sounds like it needs a couple things, but for a strictly offroad vehicle it sounds like you have a good starting point as long as the motor is in good shape.
