Installed a 3 speed transmission in my 4.6 the transmission was all assembled when I bought it new. The problem is I cant get it to shift to 3 rd gear I have leaned out the mixture and it flyies along in second. Do I have to strip the box and adjust 3rd gear from the inside. Has anyone had experiance with a 3 speed??

i think you cant adjust the third gear from the outside. if you buy the full 3speed with the casing it has 3 holes for adjusting whereas the 2speed has only 2. havent actually seen the 3 speed kit though so im not sure

the 3 speeds onlt have 2 holes man, one for the shift from 1-2 and another hole for 2-3. to ajust the tranny u need to pull the hole cover off and put 2 wheels on the ground (tillted on its side) and then turn 1 wheel until u see and opening, like a hole for and allen key, and then u just ajust it from there. clockwise for a later shift anti-clockwise for a sooner shift. good luck :)

The three speed fits in either the orginal case or the new X case which has 3 holes. No matter what case you have you can only adjust the settings between 2-3 gear though the hole on the side, as HPI hasnt changed the gear arrangment design to access both adjustments from the outside of the X case.
silverback2002 if you bought the 3 speed already assembled from HPI and you are putting it on a 4.6 engine depending on gearing it might be shifting to soon to hear the shift beteen 1-2 gears. That is how my assembled tranny was from HPI on a 4.6. Did you try running the truck off the ground to see if and when it shifts? I was running a 17/49 clutch bell spur gear combo and the shift from 1-2 gears was way to quick for me. So to adjust the shift from 1-2 you will have to diassemble the tranny for adjustment. Another trick is to lock the 2-3 gears(the one in the hole) so it doesnt shift and see if the 1-2 is shiffting where you want it to. Hope that helped.

I agree with jtmt72. Thats the same problem i had with my 3 speed. If you hold if off the ground and ease the gas you should hear it shift 1 to 2. If you have the stock case then you have to take one of the tvps off and pull the tranny out. If you have the savage x case you can just pull the 6 screw out the top and take the top off. But you should lock 3 out and then adjust 1 to 2 to where you feel it shifts right. then you can work on 2 to 3 through the hole on the side of the tranny.

You CANNOT adjust 1-2 from outside the case - only 2-3

I have the same issue... I can only hear one shift, it sounds as though 1st to 2nd isn't going...

How many turns should I turn the 2nd gear grub screw if I can't hear it at all? About 1 turn in? 2 turns?

If you here one shift that would be to second. The second to third shift is out by the sounds of it. Wind the screw that is accessible from the hole out by half a turn at a time until it starts shifting. Once it starts shifting then adjust by smaller amounts to fine tune.

I found in 3 tranny's I have installed now that 1-2 is WAY to soon, so you may never hear it.

A good base line at installation is to turn the 1-2 grub in 1/4 to 1/2 turn , and the 2-3 grub in 1/8 to 1/4 - before you ever put it in the truck. You should be able to judge what gear it is in by engine RPM's

Finally tuned the 3 speed....

I used the earlier advice (on this thread) by turning in the 2-3 grub screw fully in and adjusting the 1-2 grub screw til perfect first.

I found that if u turn the 1-2 grub fully in and turn it out 3 turns, it gets pretty much smack on the money (for my setup).

The 2-3 grub i then found was good for about 3.5 turns out.
